Our Health TechNet meeting was held on Friday, June 17, at Nelson Mullins’ offices in Washington, D.C.
The feature topic was a discussion of the causes and effects of several mergers of large proposed national insurance companies, including between Aetna and Humana, and Anthem and Cigna. Many issues are under vigorous discussion as a result of these merger proposals, including 1) why are they happening now, 2) what would their effects be on competition and prices in the marketplace, 3) what would be the result in terms of administrative efficiencies, technologies in the industry, data gathering and analysis, 4) what will be the effects on providers, such as hospitals and physicians, and value based purchasing arrangements, and what is the position on approval of the mergers by federal and state government agencies?
The discussion was led by Scott Mason of ECG Management Consultants who is a long-time observer of health industry trends.
